Abstract

The transition from Michelsberg to the Wartberg culture can be described as a "dark age" in the Neolithic cultural development of northern Hesse and eastern Westphalia. What happened between 3700 and 3400 BC, what are the roots of Wartberg and the closely related gallery graves? The Calden project provided first hints but now a new complex from the Gaulskopf near Warburg (North Rhine-Westphalia) with middle and late Michelsberg material seems to be a long awaited typological "missing link", dated between 3700 - 3500 / 3400 BC.
