Abstract

Are the ditch systems of causewayed enclosures to be regarded as boundaries between the Sacred and the Profane or between the realms of the Living and the Dead respectively? Pre-Socratic beliefs concerning the character of the "soul" might give helpful hints to what in Neolithic times was a commonly shared notion of the Beyond. It is argued here, that fully developed beliefs of the soul living on in a separate world are characteristic of later epochs.
