Abstract

The Trebur graveyard is currently one of the best documented Neolithic cemeteries in Central Europe. Yet 35 carbon 14 dates contradict the chronologically evaluated findings of the typological analysis. Although these scientific data must be treated with caution, they suggest an occupation sequence for Trebur that corresponds to medieval Reihengräber cemeteries. Consequently, it is likely that Großgartach and Hinkelstein coexisted contemporary for some time and can be interpreted as sign systems of different local identity groups. It can also be assumed that only a small part of a residence group over several generations - not an entire community over a short period - is buried in Trebur.
