On some basic questions of dendrochronology and its limitations

Abstract

The author endeavours to discuss in a general way a number of basic methodical questions of dendrochronology as this branch of applied botany has increasing importance for dating in archaeological research. The subject matter and the history of the method is shortly discussed. Following this the working procedure (measurement - presentation of the results of measurement - synchronisation) are reviewed so that the archaeologist can obtain an idea of the complexity and the amount of work required to obtain results. - In the second part the author deals with the limits which are set to the dendrochronological method in order to show the archaeologist that not every sample of wood can be used for dating purposes. In this connection, the limits imposed by the condition of the material being investigated, geographical limits, ecological limits (of the area), limits imposed by the various species of timber and climatic limits are dealt with.

О некоторых принципиальных вопросах дендрохронологии и о ее границах. Автор рассматривает некоторые методические вопросы дендрохронологии в общей форме, потому что эта отрасль прикладной ботаники приобретает сейчас для археологии все возрастающее значение. Автор коротко останавливается на предмете и истории этого метода. Затем излагается ход рабочего процесса/измерение — изложение результатов измерений — синхронизация/, чтобы показать археологам сложность и затрату труда при применении этого метода. — Во второй части автор рассматривает границы дендрохронологического метода, чтобы показать археологу, что не каждая древестная проба сразу просто датируема. При этом указывается на границы, вытекающие из состояния исследуемого материала, из географических границ, экологических границ/местоположение, а также и из границ, создающихся при сравнении различных древесных пород и из климатических границ.
