Abstract
An endeavour is made for the first time to demonstrate the differences in development by a linguistic analysis and a comparison of the social, economic and political relations. While the Incas divided the land annually according to the size of the individual production-collectives, among the Aztecs the land inside the calpulli remained with one family. This led, according to the quality of the land and according to the variable size of the fields to social differentiation inside the calpulli. The incipient breaking down of the property of the village community in land constituted the starting point for the origin of private property, a process that was encouraged by the Aztec ruler for the aristocracy. The power of the Incas and their state was more consolidated than that in the Aztec area of domination, which was a result of the different policies in respect to military conquest. As a consequence both the social and the economic development stagnated in the Inca area, while with the Aztecs development proceeded more dynamically.
In respect to the latter tribute on production, while with the Inca tribute on labour dominated. The second and third great social division of labour had been carried through with the Aztecs. There was not even a trace of evidence for the beginnings of these divisions of labour among the Incas. While the Inca state can be grouped in respect to its essential characteristics with the old oriental class societies, this is only appropriate in the Aztec area during the initial period. The development among the Aztecs (up to the Spanish invasion) went so far as to manifest the beginnings of feudal principles.
