Abstract

The following papers were read at the conference in dedication to professor Dr. H. A. Knorr on his 65th birthday organized by the Lehrstuhl Urgeschichte/Alte Geschichte, Sektion Geschichte of the Karl-Marx-Universität in Leipzig. A summary was published in vol. 16, 1975, pp. 354-360 of this journal, also a dedication to H.A. Knorr with personal data (vol. 15,1974, pp. 309-312).

The aim of the conference was the discussion of recent excavation results. Of special interest were questions of economy and settlement of the Slavic tribes living in today's territories of the German Democratic Republic and the people's Republic Poland in the early Middle Ages. Particular attention was paid to research into Slavic hill fort as economic, social and cultural centres, and to any marks of social differentiation with regard to the beginning process of feudalization.

As most research papers have not yet been published the editors and organizers of the conference decided to publish this proceeding's volume. The paper by J . Herrmann intended for the conference is included. The paper by K. Grebe on early Slavic settlements of t i e Havel river area will be supplemented and included in the Veröffentlichungen des Museums für Ur– und Frühgeschichte Potsdam. The results on Slaviс settlers in Tilleda by P. Grimm have already been published in several articles. All papers were edited by E. Hoffmann, Karl-Marx-Universität in Leipzig, and H. Grünert and M. Wolf, editors of the Ethnographisch-Archäologische Zeitschrift, Humboldt-Universität in Berlin.
