Abstract

This article focuses on the comparison of 75 free-standing house models of KGK VI, Cucuteni-Tripolye and Neolithic Greece. House models from Southeast Europe have rarely been studied and even more rarely compared with each other. Yet they hold great potential for a better understanding of Neolithic and Chalcolithic lifeworlds. In addition to the common interpretation as cult objects, the present study also looks at other possible functions and interpretations in order to work out which functions house models had between 5000 and 3000 BCE. In the course of this, a typology is also presented to enable a better comparison between the house models of the three cultural areas.
