Edited by Maria Wunderlich, Tiatoshi Jamir and Johannes Müller, this volume includes a selection of papers being presented at the workshop ‘Hierarchy and Balance: The Role of Monumentality in European and Indian Landscapes’, held between the 17^th and the 18^th of March 2018 in Kohima, India. The workshop was proceeded by a PhD workshop titled ‘Building Big? Global Scales of Monumentality – An Ethno-archaeological Perspective’, which was organized in close cooperation between Kiel University, Nagaland University and  the Nordic Graduate School - Dialogues with the Past. Both events aimed to bring together the perspectives of European and Indian archaeologists on the broad fields of megalithic construction and monumentality.

The contributions of this proceedings issue reflect the diversity of case studies which were presented during the workshops, thus offering a promising insight into different areas and traditions of megalithic construction.
